We’ll cover the most common scenarios we run into, starting with Windows and finishing with Mac OS X instructions. Initializing prepares the drive to be used by the computer, partitioning sets aside specific areas of the disk for data, and formatting sets up the framework the computer uses to store that data. In this post we present a step-by-step guide for doing this. Most often the drive just needs to be initialized, partitioned, and formatted. That's how a modern geek decorates on a budget. I dont mind putting time in to this, and if it is an internal repair just give me the instructions on what to do as I am pretty knowledgeable about electronics and pretty handy with the tool kit, If it cant be repaired it is going on the wall. So I am thinking some type of short circuit might have wiped the drive, if this is the case im thinking booting from a windows cd should show the drive up, but if that were the case now that I got the drive sitting properly in the caddy why wouldn't windows pick it up as an unallocated volume. That is actually to move the location of the power socket for the IDE drive, at first the drive was not fitting in ther slot propperly but it did spin up for a second even though it was not seated in the slot properly. I am suspecting this is a File System error on the MBR or the Volume Identifier itself, as just prior to this I was attempting to plug it in to the Docking station to format it, and that slide switch on the bottom of the docking station. The Data on it is not important, but I would like to salvage the drive if possable rather than throwing it out. The Hard drive is spinning up and than cutting out, it does this once than spins back up. This actually may be the hard drive itself, as I just tried it in the vista computer and it is reading Disk boot faliure.

There is also a slide switch on the bottom of it which I have yet to figure out, so far it appears to do nothing like the device itself. I can tell this device was made for more than just cloning because it has a Built in Card Reader and 2 USB ports on the front so it's not the wrong device.
The only instructions that came with the device are to do with cloning. Or a different SATA drive that is from a different computer and not from the NAS. I am running Windows 7, and have also tried this on windows Vista, I have installed the entire contents of the driva CD on both computers and still I get the same results. But I can not access the drive from my computer or anywhere else.

It is not showing any additional HDD, I know it is not a physical problem with the drive as it works fine in my NAS, and the Docking station does show up as Generic USB Storage, and in the BIOS I can also see the SATA Drive as USB WD. So I get it unboxed plugged in SATA Drive connected and docking station turned on. So I Just bought a All in one Dual IDE / SATA, HDD Docking Station to try and solve the VIA RAID Controller problem.
